The father left the family a long time ago. The women have managed on their own, taking up several small jobs. The mother works as a domestic help, making Rs. 6000 per month, and the elder girls offer tuitions, making Rs. 600 per month each.

The family lives in a small rental house, where they pay Rs. 1,000 per month as rent. The student is the second of the four daughters. The eldest is enrolled in a government college, where the fees is minimal; the younger ones are pursuing their studies in a government school. The engineering student has requested Aalayam for Rs. 10,000 as assistance towards fees and the remaining is being met with support from the first graduate scholarship scheme.
